USA: George Floyd protesters rally outside Minnesota governor's residence

United States, Saint Paul
June 2, 2020 at 10:07 GMT -00:00 · Published

Police say around 2,000 people gathered outside the Minnesota governor's residence in Saint Paul on Monday at a protest demanding justice for George Floyd, who was killed at the hands of police officers in nearby Minneapolis.

Demonstrators listened to speeches by activists and lawyers as some held placards calling for justice. Protesters also chanted "all four" in reference to an appeal to have all four police officers involved in the killing of George Floyd arrested.

"I expected the governor to come out and he did but he didn't say anything and he didn't stay for the whole time," said Sarah, a protester.

Protests and demonstrations have taken place across the world, having begun in the US in reaction to Floyd's death, with riots and looting also occurring in some areas.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis earlier this week after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
