USA: National Guard deployed amid protests enforce curfew in downtown LA

United States, Los Angeles
June 1, 2020 at 12:17 GMT -00:00 · Published

Around 200 people marched in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, protesting the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week.

The National Guard was in place to support the LAPD as protesters gathered in front of the LA City Hall, and to enforce the curfew announced by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on the Saturday following days of looting and unrest.

Protesters were seen confronting the National Guard and telling them to "take a knee."

"It's been a genocide in this country since we got here, you know, and it continues every day," said protester Alina about police violence on Black Americans.

"We've been very respectful. We're showing we're not looters, we're not trying to get aggressive or violent. We're just wanting our voices to be heard," said protester Lum.

Protesters were also seen leaving the area before the curfew kicked in. The curfew has now been extended to 18:00.

The National Guard was deployed to LA overnight Sunday after California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the entire LA County.

Protests and demonstrations have taken place across the US in reaction to Floyd's death, with riots and looting also occurring in some areas, including Minneapolis.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis on May 25 after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
