Spain: Nissan workers continue to protest against closure of Barcelona plant

Nissan workers gathered outside Nissan main dealership store in Barcelona on Friday to protest the Japanese multinational's decision to close its facilities in the country.

"Unfortunately, they are letting it die because there is a business cast, in which they are talking about how the world would be divided, Renault is taken by Europe, China takes Nissan and they are going to share the cake and the workers are the least important, unfortunately," explained a Nissan employee outside the dealership where the protesters plastered the building with unionist signs demanding the Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer to keep producing in Catalonia.

The protesters then moved to a nearby motorway where they implemented a blockade until police forces managed to dispersed them.

The movement demands an industrial plan for Nissan's Catalan plant that would ensure they keep their jobs. According to reports, 3,000 people will lose their jobs as a result of the factory closures, which will affect between 15,000 and 20,000 people who depended on Nissan indirectly.

Workers have been on strike since May 4 because of Nissan's strategic plan which involves reducing 20,000 employees globally, or 15 per cent of the total workforce.
