Italy: Rome's bees get a buzz out of lockdown as population soars amid reduced pollution

Bee numbers have risen noticeably during the recently ended lockdown in Rome, after the human impact on the environment was significantly curtailed, boosting local flora and fauna, experts said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant colonel of the special 'Carabinieri Forestali' department of the national police, dedicated to protecting biodiversity in Italy, Nicolo Giordano, pointed out that a drop in human activity in the past couple of months, including reduced road traffic, industrial pollution and tourism, has led to many positive effects for the local wildlife and especially for bees.

"We have compared with the last few years that bees now produce more honey," Giordano said explaining the phenomenon by a decrease in human 'interference.'

The Carabinieri Forestali placed hives for studying bees on the roof of their general command in Rome. During the two-month quarantine period due to the coronavirus, officers and researchers of the Federazione Apicoltori Italiani studied the bees, as they were seen doing on Tuesday, and noticed an improvement in their condition.

The president of the Italian beekeepers federation Raffaele Cirone stated that cleaner air and lower maintenance of the city's vegetation had helped bees track the sources of nectar much faster, boosting the growth of the colonies.

Italian nature had seen surprising improvements since the beginning of the lockdown, with dolphins coming back to the coasts and the water in Venice's canals returning to a cleaner light-blue.
