Germany: Auto industry 'gambled away' public trust - Seibert on landmark Volkswagen case

German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that automobile companies had "gambled away" public trust during a press conference in Berlin on Monday, following a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice earlier that day that Volkswagen must reimburse car owners who purchased vehicles outfitted to be able to cheat emissions tests.

"The fact, that a lot of trust in the automobile industry has been lost and also has been gambled away by automobile corporations, has been put on record often enough. The Chancellor has clearly expressed herself," Seibert said.

One the other hand, Seibert also stressed the importance of the auto industry to the German economy, saying "it is also a fact, that this is an industry of very high importance for Germany, for our industrial performance, for our employments, for our entire economical situation.''

Seibert then said that "the Federal government - you have asked about support - has appointed a task force with representatives of the Federal government, representatives of the automobile industry, representatives of the unions, which have the task to discuss together, which measures could be suitable to revive the automobile economy and at the same time to achieve a contribution of modernisation in the direction of innovative automobile engineering.''

Seibert also praised the country's success when dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, saying that " further steps to ease and open are possible," but that the country must remain vigilant and not lose progress due to wanting "too much too fast."

The court ruling against Volkswagen came following a complaint from a Volkswagen owner who sought a full refund of the purchase price for his car.

A previous court ordered that the plaintiff, Herbert Gilbert, must be paid compensation, with his car taken back by Volkswagen. Value depreciation was taken into account, and other cases will be individually determined.

Volkswagen were found guilty five years ago of manipulating emission programming during testing to bypass US laws on engine pollution regulations. Monday's ruling will pave the way for customers to seek compensation for their purchases. Car owners are entitled to a refund for cars that were fitted with devices designed to manipulate emissions tests. There are around 60,000 cases open in Germany.

An estimated 11 million diesel cars were implicated in the scandal, 8 million of them in Europe. 2.4 million cars are expected to be recalled in Germany alone.
