Thirst for knowledge - Peruvian children walk many kilometres through highlands to attend radio lessons

Peru, Katati Ururi

Almost every day since the coronavirus pandemic emergency began, a group of students who live in the isolated village of Kantati Ururi, in the Puno region, have to walk nearly 15 kilometres across the highlands towards a hill where they can receive a radio signal transmitting educational content for children.

Children and their parents were seen carrying books and portable radios on Friday, before starting their journey across an area of the highlands that are located more than 4,000 meters above the sea level.

"We have to walk for two or three hours because the children don't walk like adults, so we don't get to an exact time," says Francisco Aruquipa, a local resident, adding that "at 07:30 or 08:00 we have to be leaving the house to get to the hill."

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Peruvian Government closed the schools and urged students to continue their education through online lessons. But in the village of Kantati Ururi, this is not possible at the moment.

"Our problem, as students, is that there is no communication through mobile phones, nor is there any communication through the radio or the internet," said Jenifer Aruquipa, a secondary school student.

As of this Sunday, Peru has registered 119,959 cases of the coronavirus with 3,456 deaths related to the virus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
