Japan: Shinzo Abe expands state of emergency to whole country

Japan, Tokyo
April 16, 2020 at 19:55 GMT -00:00 · Published

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced from Tokyo on Thursday that the state of emergency to curb the COVID-19 outbreak is now nationwide.

The measure, first imposed for Tokyo and six other prefectures last week, expands from today to all of Japan's 47 prefectures until May 6 and should allow governors to issue stay-at-home directives to fight the outbreak.

"We will have to achieve a minimum of 70 percent contact reduction, and utmost 80 percent contact reduction, in order to finish this emergency in the remaining period until May 6. We apologise for the inconvenience, but we ask for your continued cooperation in order to prevent further spread of the infection," Abe said.

The government aims to restrict the movement of people in the upcoming "Golden Week", the week from late April to early May that contains a number of Japanese holidays.

Abe also announced plans to give financial aid to each of Japan's 120 million citizens.

"Due to this declaration of emergency, various actions such as refraining from going out will be restricted, and the ruling party will make a re-examination with the aim of providing 100,000 yen [€860] per person to all people nationwide," the PM stated.

Almost 9,000 people in Japan were tested positive and 178 have died with COVID-19, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
