Turkey: Tehran-Istanbul flight diverted to Ankara over coronavirus concerns

A Turkish Airlines flight from Tehran that was headed to Istanbul was diverted to Ankara, Turkey's capital, on Tuesday over fears related to the recent coronavirus outbreak in Iran.

The plane, which was holding passengers who had travelled to Iran's Qom region, where the Iranian outbreak began, had 132 passengers and eight staff on board. The flight was diverted to Ankara as medical personnel there are more experienced in handling possible infection.

They landed at Ankara's Esenboga Airport at 10:29 local time (07:29 GMT) and all passengers were taken for preliminary health exams.

Seventeen passengers were being treated as possible cases as they were reported to have higher-than-normal temperatures.

Turkish Airlines announced on Tuesday it had cancelled all flights to Iranian cities except Tehran until March 10th, as well as deciding that return flights to Turkey will transport Turkish passengers only.

Turkey had previously closed its land borders with Iran. So far, Turkey is yet to report a case of coronavirus.

Fortunately, none of the Turkish passengers showed evidence of coronavirus infection.

"Initial medical examinations have been completed for all passengers and crew. None of the 140 people from the Tehran flight showed any sign of disease," Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca confirmed later on Tuesday. Despite this, all 140 people on the flight will be quarantined for two weeks as a precautionary measure.
