Switzerland: Turkey doesn't have 'strong military presence in Libya' - Cavusoglu

Switzerland, Davos
January 22, 2020 at 11:46 GMT -00:00 · Published

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that his country doesn't have a "strong military presence in Libya," while speaking on a panel at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, on Wednesday.

Cavusoglu added that Ankara is "ready to work with other actors, that's why we supported the Berlin process."

He also stated that Turkish forces in Libya are there "for training and also [for] education, nothing else."

The Turkish foreign minister also touched on Syria, branding Russia as "the guarantor of the regime."

Cavusoglu said that while Turkey and Russia cooperate, they "couldn't agree on the [Syrian] regime or other issues."

"And today I cannot support the aggression of the regime, but Russia is the guarantor of the regime, and we have the Sochi agreement, and Russia is obliged to stop this aggression."

"The situation in Idlib is our main focus, because [the] regime has been increasing its aggression, and [is] indiscriminately killing civilians and women and children," he added.

The World Economic Forum 2020 takes place between January 21 and 24, with around 1,500 world leaders set to attend to discuss global, regional and industrial agendas under the theme 'Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World.'
