Switzerland: Kashmir situation 'biggest impending refugee crisis' - Pakistan's Khan
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan asked world leaders to take note of India's actions in Kashmir and that if the "impending" refugee crisis is not prevented it might lead to "a conflict between two nuclear armed countries," while speaking at the first UN Global Refugee Forum in Geneva on Tuesday.
"Since 5 August eight million Kashmiris have been literally shut inside. Their rights have been taken, people have been imprisoned, their leaders are in jail. All communication has been cut off, but the most important thing, which the world needs to understand, is that the professed aim is to change the demography of Kashmir from a Muslim majority to a Muslim minority," Khan said.
The Pakistani Prime Minister warned the current situation would lead to fleeing Indian Muslim minorities, initiating "a refugee crisis that would dwarf other crises."
Khan also warned that the recent citizen registration act in India's Assam state could lead to a situation similar to that involving the Rohingya people in Myanmar in 2016.
The UN Global Refugee Forum is hosted the United Nations in Geneva from 16 to 18 December 2019 to create the opportunity 'to translate the principle of international responsibility-sharing into concrete action.'
