Germany: Assange's father says son's case is like that of detained Huawei CFO
Julian Assange's father John Shipton criticised the UK and Sweden for detaining Assange in a debate about WikiLeaks, oppression and the Bolivian "coup" at the University of Cologne on Friday.
Shipton called for his son to be "allowed his freedom and compensated," referring to a UN report which called his detention "arbitrary." He drew comparisons between Assange and Huawei Chief Financial officer Meng Wanzhou's arrest in Vancouver, who has been charged with bank fraud and is fighting extradition to the US, and with software developer Ola Bini who is barred from leaving Ecuador for allegedly participating in a hacking attempt on the government. Bini is also a personal friend of Assange's.
Shipton stated that there was "a coup" in Bolivia two weeks ago. He said that the names of those involved in the "corruption," who have "constant contact with the United States Embassy" are on the WikiLeaks website.
Julian Assange is still fighting a bid to extradite him to the US and is currently held in high security London Belmarsh prison. 60 doctors are concerned about his health and are attempting to have him moved to a hospital.
