These Indian cows got fancy new coats for the winter
The Ayodhya municipality in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh handed out cow blankers to farmers, in order to protect the sacred animals from dropping temperatures as winter approaches, as seen in footage shot on Thursday.
Farmers in Firozpur, near Ayodhya, can be seen fitting the cows with their fancy new apparel, an improvement on the usual jute bags cows wear during winter months. The new coats are designed not to fall off the way the bags used to, and have multiple layers to keep the animals warm.
According to the Ayodhya Municipal Commissioner Dr. Neeraj Shukla, the coats are locally made and environmental-friendly. The cost varies between 250 and 300 rupees (€3.17-3.80) per piece.
Uttar Pradesh state is part of the so-called 'cow belt', where cows are considered sacred animals and eating beef is banned.
