France: European Parliament declares global climate emergency
The European Parliament passed a resolution declaring a climate emergency in Europe and around the world at a session in Strasbourg on Thursday. The document was passed with 429 votes in favour, 225 votes against and 19 abstentions.
It urges all member states to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 to become climate neutral by the middle of the century. The resolution also aims to put pressure on the EU Commission to make sure all proposals on climate change are in line with the goal of limiting global warming to under 1.5 °C.
The declaration comes just days before the UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) taking in Madrid on December 2-13.
