Iraq: Four reported killed as protests continue in Baghdad

Iraq, Baghdad
November 9, 2019 at 22:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

At least four people were reportedly killed, with many more injured, after police used live ammunition against anti-government protesters, who demonstrated in Baghdad on Saturday.

According to reports, the security forces managed to regain control over three bridges in central Baghdad, which were partially blocked for several days, along with several other entrances into Baghdad's Green Zone.

Tuktuk vehicles and ambulances transporting the injured were seen in and around Tahrir Square amid the protests.

Protests broke out in the country on October 1, sparked by unemployment, deep-seated corruption and a lack of basic services.

According to a report released by the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) on Tuesday, an estimated 97 people have been killed at anti-government demonstrations between October 25 and November 4, while thousands more have been injured.
