Mauricio Macri, current president of the country, is seeking re-election against opposition candidate Alberto Fernandez, who is running for office for the first time after having been chief of cabinet during the period of Kirchnerism.
To obtain victory in the first round, a candidate must achieve more than 45 percent of the vote, or at least 40 percent plus more than ten percentage points more than the next most popular candidate.
