UN: Trump and Abe announce ‘phenomenal new trade agreement’ between US and Japan
US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe formally announced the first step of a "phenomenal new trade agreement" between their two nations at a joint press briefing at the United Nations in New York City on Wednesday.
"Under the market access agreement that we're announcing today, Japan will open new markets to approximately $7 billion [€6.3 billion] in American agricultural products. Japanese tariffs will now be significantly lower or eliminated entirely for U.S. beef, pork, wheat, cheese, corn, wine and so much more. This is a huge victory for America's farmers, ranchers and growers and that's very important to me," Trump said.
The Japanese PM also echoed Trump’s comments stating that the new agreement will "bring benefits to everyone in Japan as well as in the United States" and called it a "win-win" for both countries.
The 74th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York on September 17 with the global climate emergency as one of the key topics. High-level General Debate started on Tuesday, September 24, with 91 heads of state and even more top diplomats from 193 nations coming together. The theme of the General Debate is "Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion".
