USA: 'We gave them a two-week reprieve' - Trump on China tariff delay

United States, Washington DC

US President Donald Trump spoke to the media in Washington DC minutes before departing to Baltimore on Thursday.

Trump touched on the application of tariffs on Chinese goods, the newly-vacant security advisor position, and the rumours about Israeli espionage near the White House grounds.

"I got a call from heads of China. The call was directed to my people actually and they asked whether or not it would be possible to delay the hit on the tariffs up to 30 percent from 25 percent. Would it be possible to take it off of the October 1st date? We gave them a two week in honour of President Xi, we gave them a two-week reprieve and so we'll be doing the tariffs on October 15th instead of October 5th. Or first," Trump said.

When talking about the vacant security advisor position after firing John Bolton, Trump cleared the rumours of having Mike Pompeo taking the role, and said there were '15 candidates' that were being considered.

Concerning the reports that have surfaced about Israeli espionage in Washington DC, the president said he found it hard to believe and praised the current great relationship the two countries have.
