UN: Israel's annexation of occupied Jordan Valley 'without any international legal effect' - Sec-Gen spokesman
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's vow to annex part of the occupied West Bank if he is returned to office this week is "without any international legal effect" in the eyes of the UN.
Speaking at a press conference at UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, the UN Secretary General's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said such "unilateral actions" would damage ongoing peace process between Israel and Palestine.
"[It] would be devastating to the potential of reviving negotiations, regional peace, and the very essence of a two-state solution," he added.
Netanyahu said he would seek "Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and northern Dead Sea" in a bid for support from right-wing parties whose support he needs to build a coalition.
