USA: Miami Bahamians band together to support victims after Hurricane Dorian

United States, Miami

In Miami's "Little Bahamas" neighbourhood, the local community started rallying to help the victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas, as footage filmed on Friday shows.

The Christ Episcopal Church in Miami's historic Coconut Grove neighbourhood became a collection point for supplies and donations, waiting to be flown by cargo plane or transported by boat to the hurricane-stricken islands next week.

Locals responded to the call donating food, equipment, other supplies and their time. "Our efforts have been supported not only by persons who have brought donations, but also by the countless volunteers that have volunteered their time," said Father Jonathan Archer, director of the church.

Dorian hit the northern Bahamas from Sunday to Tuesday, leaving at least 43 people dead and thousands missing. The hurricane, which was downgraded to Category 1 storm, made landfall in the Carolinas, flooding coastal towns and cutting off electricity.
