Russia: Passengers recount 'scary' Ural Airlines rough landing
Terrified passengers said there was panic on the Ural Airlines jet which made a rough landing in a field shortly after take-off from Moscow's Zhukovsky airport on Thursday.
"Of course passengers were panicking, it was scary. But we were calmed down by cabin crew, they told us that everything is fine. We were provided with medical assistance," one of the passengers, Yekaterina Svechnikova, said.
Another passenger, Svetlana Babina, also recounted the moment something went wrong with the plane.
"There was this specific sound. Like we got into some hole. That’s it. Then the engine started to make some sound," she said, adding that "We must pay tribute to the pilot. He landed as skillfully as it was possible in this situation.”
The Airbus A321 jet was bound for Simferopol from Moscow with 234 people aboard when it made an emergency landing in a cornfield shortly after taking off from Zhukovsky airport.
According to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency, the preliminary cause of the incident is engine malfunction caused by at least one bird being ingested by one of the engine turbines.
Russia’s Ministry of Health said that 23 people were injured in the rough landing. The exact circumstances of the incident are being investigated.
