USA: Valverde welcomes 'heightened scrutiny' as Barca boss
Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde said he accepted the "heightened scrutiny" which comes with managing one of the biggest clubs in world football as his side prepare for their final pre-season game against Napoli.
"We are not going to fool ourselves. Barcelona is always going to face heightened scrutiny," admitted Valverde, when speaking at a pre-match press conference from Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Friday.
"Our success is always counted in defeats, rather than victories. That's the reality and it's something I already knew about. I accept it."
As for Barca's prospects this season, Valverde hoped for a similar outcome as last year: "When we got to the beginning of May, we were champions of La Liga, we had already won the Supercopa, we were going to play in the final of the Copa del Rey and we were Champions League semi finalists."
Barcelona were subsequently knocked out of the Champions League after a sensational comeback from Liverpool before going on to losing the Copa del Rey to Valencia.
The Catalan giants begin their La Liga campaign against Athletic Bilbao on August 16.
