Croatia: PM Plenkovic lauds key victory on 24th anniv. of ‘Operation Storm’

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic lauded the country's decisive victory during 'Operation Storm' in the Croatian War of Independence, during a military parade and ceremony in Knin commemorating its 24th anniversary on Monday.

During the ceremony, the Prime Minister described the operation as a "crucial endeavour" and "pivotal battle" that turned a page in the nation's history. Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic also emphasised the importance of the battle, crediting military veterans, doctors, nurses and patriots for the victory.

Whilst viewed as a victorious occasion in Croatia, the anniversary of Operation Storm is marked as a day of remembrance in neighbouring Serbia where memorials were held for the nearly 700 ethnic Serb civilians allegedly killed during the offensive, although Croatian sources dispute this figure and say that only around 200 were killed.

Nearly 200,000 Croatian Serbs were displaced as a result of Operation Storm and Croatia's celebration of the event has continued to strain the relationship between Serbia and its neighbour over recent years.
