France: Ancient Syrian artifacts destroyed in WWII on display at the Louvre

Ancient statues and archeological monuments from the ruins of the Syrian Tell Halaf site, located near the current Turkish-Syrian border, were put on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris, footage from Tuesday shows. The display will be running until the 12th of August.

Named 'Forgotten kingdoms,' the exhibition is dedicated to the realms of Turkey and Syria between 1100 and 700 BC. “Most of the things you can see around me are coming from the Palace of Kapara in Tell Halaf. Those sculptures were decorating a Palace, which was rather a kind of hall for ceremonies more than a place to live in,” explained Vincent Blanchard, Chief curator at the Louvre Museum and curator of the exhibition.

The collection was initially discovered by German archaeologist Max Von Oppenheim at the beginning of the 19th century, when, as part of a diplomatic expedition in Cairo, he went to northern Syria and first heard about the Tell Halaf site, where people have found ancient statues of animals with human heads.

After being transported to Berlin, the archaeological finds were severely damaged during the Second World War and later restored at Berlin's famous Pergamon Museum, in a work that took ten years of reconstruction.

The collection has also been shown in Berlin in 2011.
