France: Le Pen says EU elections a chance 'to send a message' to Macron
French National Rally party leader Marine Le Pen said the upcoming European election will be a time to send a message to French President Emmanuel Macron, while speaking at a press conference alongside her National Rally lead candidate Jordan Bardella in the French city of Henin-Beaumont, on Friday.
"The 26 May election was the popular referendum that the French people asked for but did not get," she said, in a reference to demands made by the Yellow Vests protest.
In a final rally ahead of the European ballot, Le Pen and Bardella called on voters backing three of their opponents to give National Rally their ballots, speaking of a "useful vote."
"I think the voters of Mr. Bellamy, Mr. Dupont-Aignan and Mrs. Aubry share this desire of not wanting to see Emmanuel Macron taking the lead. I tell them that it is not necessary that Macron takes the lead, he must not feel legitimate, and the only way to prevent this from happening is to vote for the National Rally on Sunday, to vote usefully," said the young candidate.
Commenting on France's bilateral relations with Russia, Le Pen stressed: "each nation must be able to determine the relationship it wants with Russia. I would like to prohibit the European Union from engaging in diplomacy in lieu of states. Diplomacy is one of the essential elements of a nation's sovereignty."
