UK: Brits express doubts following May’s second referendum offer

United Kingdom, London
May 22, 2019 at 16:44 GMT +00:00 · Published

Brexiteers and remainers reacted to UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement that MPs will have a vote on whether to hold a second EU referendum if they support her new Brexit deal, in London on Wednesday.

One British citizen said that “this second referendum is an absolute betrayal of our democracy,” and described May’s offer as “blackmailing.” "We voted to leave and Brexit means exit, so that's it, end of story," he added.

John, a support of Brexit, declared that he would “act against it, because they’ve totally ignored our democracy.”

Remainer Michelle, on the other hand, said that she “would have loved to have seen Article 50 revoked by the MPs themselves, them taking on the responsibility of that decision.”

An Irish citizen, Peter, said meanwhile that “the only people who are [going to] win out of Brexit, they’re the people who make flags.”

“They're risking civil unrest, because it's going on for too long. People are getting angry,” warned another Brit.

The United Kingdom has until October 31 to find a deal which could garner support in the House of Commons and with the European Union, without which it risks crashing out of the bloc without a deal.
