Iceland: Sweden’s decision to reopen Assange rape case politicised – WikiLeaks editor

WikiLeaks Editor-in-Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson said Swedish prosecutor’s decision to reopen the rape case investigation against Julian Assange did not come as a surprise, speaking in Reykjavik on Monday.

Hrafnsson stated that Assange “has always been ready and willing to cooperate with Swedish investigation throughout the years and I assume that he will welcome this opportunity to clear his name and get this matter over and done with.”

The Icelandic journalist claimed that the documents related to the alleged rape were leaked out on purpose.

“There are many abnormalities in this highly politicised process which pertain to Julian’s position worldwide. The crown prosecution service in the UK was in the driver's seat in this case,” said the WikiLeaks editor.

Hrafnsson added that if Assange is extradited to Sweden, there is political pressure for the Swedish authorities to onward extradite him to the United States.

"The handling of the affair by Swedish authorities have been highly criticised by the United Nations’ committee. And it is very hard to see that he has an opportunity to a fair trial in Sweden, in the UK or in the United States."

"We are fighting here in the end an indictment and a prosecution before a secret jury in the United States for publishing truthful information. That's the heart of the matter,” the WikiLeaks editor concluded.

Swedish prosecutors dropped the investigation in 2017 since they were unable to proceed while Assange remained living in the Ecuadorean embassy in London. The WikiLeaks founder also faced an investigation for a second sex-related allegation, which was dropped in 2015 because the statute of limitations had passed. He has since denied both allegations.

On April 11, a lawyer for one of the women involved asked for the investigation to be resumed.

After spending seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Assange is in prison in Britain following his arrest in April. He was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison for bail violation.
