Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the nation ahead of the 2019 Victory Day Parade on Moscow's Red Square on Thursday to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the official capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet forces in the World War II.

Paying tribute to the veterans, Putin said that Russia will never forget the "courage and self-abnegation" of those soldiers, and called on all countries "to battle against new threats of terrorism, neo-Nazism and extremism."

"We always did and we will do all the necessary to ensure the high combat capacity of our armed forces and the defence potential of the most modern level," the Russian leader added.

More than 13,600 servicemen and 130 pieces of military equipment are taking part in Moscow's Victory Day Parade. The traditional military aircraft flyover was cancelled at the last minute due to thick clouds over the Russian capital.

Hundreds of commemorative events are to be held in Russia and around the globe to mark the anniversary of the official capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet forces in 1945.
