UN: Palestine condemns Israeli ‘aggression’ after weekend of violence
Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations (UN) Riyad Mansour condemned Israeli "aggression" and called the blockade of the Gaza Strip a "root cause" of the discord between Israel and Palestine, while speaking from the UN headquarters in New York City on Monday.
"We need to put an end to this blockade. That is a crime against humanity, and as long as this crime continues, then - you know - you'll see episodes of confrontation," he said.
The diplomat also accused the UN Security Council of lacking the political will to implement its resolutions on Israel but added "that does not mean that we will stop knocking the door in the Security Council, we will."
Violence in Gaza escalated over the weekend, with Hamas and Israel exchanging rocket fire and air strikes on Saturday and Sunday, resulting in the deaths of four Israelis and at least 25 Palestinians. A truce was agreed upon on Monday.
