Russia: Putin invites ‘foreign partners’ to join development of Arctic region
Russian President Vladimir Putin invited foreign investors to participate in the construction of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) ports, speaking at the 5th International Arctic Forum in St. Petersburg on Tuesday.
He stated that Russia has plans to develop the Arctic route to be open all year round, adding that in order to develop the infrastructure and communication facilities, "we invite our foreign partners to join creation of the hubs at the final points of the route."
Putin said that at the moment the Arctic accounts for "more than 10 percent of all investments in the Russian Federation. I am convinced that the importance of the Arctic factor in the country's economy will only be growing."
The two-day International Arctic Forum brings together international organisations, government bodies, and scientific and business communities from Russia and around the world, to consolidate efforts to ensure the sustainable development of the Arctic and to improve living standards in the region.
