Israel: Netanyahu casts vote alongside wife Sara in Israeli elections
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara cast their ballots in the Israeli general elections, in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
the elections were supposed to take place in November 2019, but were brought forward following a dispute between members of the current Netanyahu government over a bill on national service for the ultra-Orthodox population.
Netanyahu has been serving as Israeli Prime Minister since 2009.
Over six million eligible voters will vote from 07:00 to 22:00 local time (04:00 to 19:00 GMT) at 10,720 polling stations throughout Israel to choose their new representatives for the Israeli Knesset.
This year, a record 47 political parties are competing for the 120 seats in the Knesset with a minimum threshold of 3.25 percent of the vote required to win a seat. A coalition of parties require at least 61 seats among them to form a government.
The Likud party of current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Blue and White coalition (Kahol Lavan) led by former Israeli military Chief of Staff Benny Gantz are currently leading in the polls.
Exit polls are expected to be released when voting closes at 22:00 (19:00 GMT) with election results due to be announced overnight.
