France: 'Free Assange' protesters bombard Aussie embassy with paper planes
Dozens of activists protested outside the Australian embassy in Paris on Friday in a show of support for WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange.
Assange's close friend Vaughan Smith told reporters earlier that he "expects to be thrown out" of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in the coming days.
"France should give him political asylum. It's not possible to mistreat someone in this way just because he revealed news that bother rich people and those who have the power," said Patricia, a protester.
The WikiLeaks founder first moved into the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012, in order to avoid extradition to Sweden on sexual assault allegations.
While that investigation was dropped by the judiciary, Assange still faces charges in the UK for violating bail conditions while fleeing, as well as the possibility of extradition to the United States for publishing sensitive government information on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Assange was born in Townsville, Australia in 1971 but has been an Ecuadorian citizen since December 2017.
