Australia: Chemical fire in factory smothers Melbourne suburbs in smoke
An enormous chemical fire broke out in a Campbellfield factory in Melbourne suburbs on Friday, sending acrid smoke throughout the area.
Over 175 firefighters have been deployed to fight the blaze, which broke out at a waste storage facility at 6:40am local time Friday (19:40 GMT, Thursday).
An explosion could be heard and a huge plume of thick black smoke could be seen emerging from the building. Residents of nearby suburbs were told to stay indoors to avoid the smoke.
The state's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) suspended the company's license last month, after it was discovered that they had stockpiled chemicals at almost three times the allowable level.
Due to the amount of flammable material in the factory, firefighters believe the blaze could last for days.
