Turkey: 'We are not slaves' - Erdogan says Ankara free to buy Russian S400s

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country was well within its rights to start the "co-production of [missile systems] S400s, maybe S500s." He made the remarks in Ankara on Wednesday.

"Now we have a deal with Russia. We will start co-production of S400s, maybe S500s," stated the Turkish leader.

Erdogan went on to query why Turkey was being questioned about its missile deal with Moscow. US General Curtis Scaparrotti told the Senate Armed Services Committee earlier this week that he didn't recommend the delivery of F-35 jets to Turkey if Ankara continues with the S400 deal.

"Those who are opposing us on [the acquisition of the] S400s why are they not doing the same thing to Greece for [its] S300s? Why not to Bulgaria for [its] S300s? Why not Slovakia for [its] S300?," he queried.

"There shouldn't be a regulation that we should buy everything from you," he added before going on to stress that Turkey was not a nation of "slaves."
