
Democratic Republic of Congo: Tshisekedi sworn in as president in Kinshasa
Felix Antoine Tshisekedi was sworn in as President of the Democratic Republic of Congo at a ceremony held in Kinshasa's Palace of the Nation on Thursday.
Tshisekedi, leader of opposition party UDPS, was elected with 38.57 per cent of the votes cast in the presidential election of December 30 2018, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission's figures.
The election result was contested by opponent Martin Fayulu of the Lamuka coalition, but confirmed by the Constitutional Court last week.
He is the fifth president in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the first one to be democratically elected. He succeeded Joseph Kabila who was in office for 18 years.
