Belgium: MEP Javier Couso criticises US intervention in Venezuela
Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left member Javier Couso criticized US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Juan Guaido as head of Venezuela during an interview in Brussels on Thursday.
“We expected a more official statement about events, no less than regime change, which are taking place with clear assistance from and under the leadership of the US, taking advantage of the current situation,” he said, adding that the European Commission did not recognize Guaido.
“For some time now we’ve heard statements from Trump that he’s considering military intervention. Therefore, we should stand against military intervention as firmly as possible because it would not be legal,” he said, adding “it’s not for them to decide who rules one country or another.”
Guaido, who is leader of the opposition and also the head of the National Assembly, declared Maduro's January 10 inauguration illegitimate, and swore himself in as Interim President of Venezuela.
US President Donald Trump was among the first world leaders to recognise Guaido as acting president.
Other governments including Brazil, Canada, Chile and Colombia have followed suit.
