
Argentina: Locals of hantavirus-hit province recall how deadly epidemic spread
Locals of hantavirus-hit Epuyen city in Chubut province recalled the events that led to a deadly epidemic spreading in the region and killing at least 14 people, as footage filmed on Wednesday shows.
The first victims were allegedly infected at a birthday party in a farm in early November last year, as a resident and a shopkeeper Norma recalls.
"A man got inside. Obviously, nobody knew he was sick, he didn't know he had the virus either", she said, adding that he infected all those sitting at the same table.
Another local, Sebastian Valle said that the disease took his father and two sisters, adding that he was also in a hospital for 10 days.
The first victim, a 14-year-old girl died on December 3.
Hantavirus can be contracted by humans as a result of contact with rodent urine, saliva or feces.
