Lionel Messi scored his 400th La Liga goal as Barcelona maintained their five point lead at the top of the table on Sunday night in the Nou Camp.

Messi, already the all-time leading scorer in the Spanish top flight, scored Barca's second. He achieved the feat in only his 435th league appearance.

Luis Suarez scored a goal either side of half time to give the home side a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Ernesto Valverde was full of praise for the Argentine at his post-match press conference.

"He's an extraordinary player who's not just above all a goalscorer," the tactician told reporters. "It's everything else that he offers. The chances he creates or moves he starts, the assists, the things that go on around him. Everything."

Barca now sit five points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid.
