Argentina: Putin and Abe discuss bilateral relations and peace treaty at G20
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires on Saturday, discussing bilateral relations and the peace treaty between the two nations.
The Russian leader mentioned that the leaders' last meeting took place only two weeks ago at the ASEAN summit in Singapore, noting that "We seize every opportunity get on the same page on our engagement in many important areas of our cooperation."
Abe on his part emphasised his willingness "to have a thorough discussion on the peace treaty taking into account the results of our meeting in Singapore."
Four islands located between Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula and Japan's northern island of Hokkaido are the cause of the long-standing territorial dispute between Russia and Japan.
In Russia, the islands are known as the Southern Kuril Islands, while Japan refers to them as the Northern Territories. Both Russia and Japan claim ownership of the islands, with the decades-long disagreement leaving a post-WWII peace deal still unsigned.
The 13th G20 Leaders' Summit taking place from November 30 - December 1 in the Argentine capital is the first-ever G20 summit to be hosted in South America.
