Germany: FM Maas talks peace, partnership with Colombian counterpart

Germany, Berlin
November 22, 2018 at 15:20 GMT +00:00 · Published

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and his Colombian counterpart Carlos Holmes Trujillo touched down on Germany's support for the Colombian peace process during an press conference in Berlin on Thursday.

"Despite all the difficulties, Colombia remains a silver lining and a ray of hope for conflicts that have lasted for years, or decades, and for which it is difficult to find a solution," Mass said, when commenting on implementation of the peace process between the Colombian government and FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia).

Trujillo thanked the German government for their engagement in Colombia's migration crisis, which sees over one million people entering the Latin American nation from neighbouring Venezuela.

Trujillo went on to support Germany joining the list of nations who are calling for an International Criminal Court investigation into alleged human rights abuses of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. "We hold the political support of the German government in extremely high esteem," the Colombian diplomat said.

The ministers were scheduled to open the conference "Partner Colombia: Contribution of Economics to the Route to Peace" (Partner Kolumbien: Beitrag der Wirtschaft auf dem Weg zum Frieden) on Thursday.
