Iran's ballistic missile strike on militants in the region to the east of the Euphrates River in Syria was a "revenge on terrorist groups backed by the US and regional Arab countries," according to Commander of the IRGC Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, speaking from Tehran on Monday.

"They used bullets, we answered with missiles," Hajizadeh said referring to the deadly Ahvaz attack on September 22.

According to the PR office of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the six ballistic missiles that were launched allegedly killed several of the leaders and participants of the Ahvaz attack.

The ballistic missiles reportedly targeted Abu Kamal, a city on the Euphrates River in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate of eastern Syria, near the border with Iraq and was followed by an airstrike carried out by seven UAVs (Unmanned aerial vehicles).

Footage released by the Iranian State TV captures the missiles as they were launched from the city of Kermanshah, under the name 'Muharram strike.' The missiles travelled a reported distance of 570 kilometres (355 miles) before reaching its targets.

On September 22, gunmen opened fire from behind the stands of a military parade in Ahvaz commemorating the 38th anniversary of the eight-year Iran-Iraq war. A total of 25 people were killed and 60 injured, making it the deadliest terror attack the country has faced in almost a decade.
