September 5, 2018 at 17:28 GMT +00:00 · Published

The French national football team were seen training in Munich's Allianz Arena on Wednesday, on the eve of their UEFA Nations League opener against Germany.

The new tournament will be played in 2018/9 outside of the normal World Cup and European Championship calendar.

All 55 European nations have been split into four tiers based on their ranking, which are subdivided into groups of three or four teams.

Each side will play against a home and away fixture against their opponents this autumn. The winner of each group will gain promotion to a higher tier, while the team which finishes bottom will suffer relegation. The four teams which top the top tier groups will go on to play a mini-tournament the following summer to decide the eventual winner of the inaugural UEFA Nations League.
