Blood stains and a dusty, scattered marking were left on the tarmac just outside the gates of the US embassy in Beijing on Thursday, after a small bomb was detonated.

Eyewitnesses remembered hearing a explosion and rushing to safety inside the embassy.

Embassy staff and soldiers have been trying to restore calm.

Around 13:00 local time (05:00 GMT), a man detonated an self-made explosive device outside the US embassy, injuring no-one but himself.

Chinese police gave his surname as Jiang and said he came from Inner Mongolia. He hurt his own hand after setting off a "firecracker like " device outside the embassy's southeast corner, next to the queue of visa applicants.
