UK: Home Sec. says Skripal poisoning is 'main line of inquiry' in Amesbury case

United Kingdom, London
July 5, 2018 at 12:49 GMT -00:00 · Published

British Home Secretary Sajid Javid said possible links between the alleged poisoning by nerve agent of Sergei and Yulia Skripal and the hospitalisation of a couple in the Wiltshire town of Amesbury are the ’main line of inquiry’, in a statement made to UK parliament on Thursday afternoon.

"Obviously, this incident will invoke memories of the reckless attempted murder, murder attempts of Sergei and Yulia Skripal earlier this year and I know that many of you will question whether this incident is linked to that one. That is clearly the main line of inquiry," Javid told the House of Commons.

The home secretary did, however, preach caution, saying the government "must not jump to conclusions" and "must give the police the space and the time to carry out their investigations".

At the conclusion of his statement, Javid demanded an explanation from the Russian government for the incidents in Salisbury and Amesbury.

"The eyes of the world are currently on Russia, not least because of the World Cup. It is now time that the Russian state comes forward and explains exactly what has gone on, " he warned.

In response to a question from Labour Member of Parliament (MP) Mike Gapes calling on MPs not to appear on Russian state broadcaster RT, Javid said those with "an ounce of common sense" would not appear on the channel.

The home secretary had chaired a COBRA meeting after a couple were found unconscious and in a critical condition in Amesbury on Saturday. UK authorities believe they were poisoned by the nerve agent Novichok.
