Russia: Lavrov and Jordanian counterpart discuss de-escalation zone in southern Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi discussed the de-escalation zone in southern Syria, the Israeli-Palestinian settlement and the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a joint press conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Lavrov reiterated that according to the agreement reached between USA, Russia and Jordan on the de-escalation zone in southern Syria, the area should be controlled solely by the Syrian army.

The foreign minister said however that nearly 40 percent of the de-escalation zone still remains under the control of the militant groups.

The Russian top diplomat said that while the fight against the militants continues in Daraa and southern Syria, Moscow “will be helping with humanitarian aid for citizens and will create as favourable conditions as possible for those who were displaced in order to return home as soon as possible.”Lavrov also stated that due to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s “extremely tight” schedule the two diplomats will not meet face to face before the summit between Presidents Trump and Putin in Helsinki on July 16.

Safadi on his part talked about Israeli-Palestine conflict, stating that “Jordan’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian settlement implies the cessation of Palestine’s occupation, creation of the Palestinian State as it looked like in 1967 and with Eastern Jerusalem as the capital.”
