SOT, Matteo Salvini, Italian Minister of Interior (Italian): "Yes, 'Salvini help, solve it'. I'm not Batman but we'll see how is it possible to intervene doing again what back in the day was called as a 'census', everyone went crazy, let's call it a registry, situation, photography, to understand what are we talking about. On expulsions, we are working also with a colleague minister, about the expulsions of foreign convicts that are in Italy. However, we need a deal with the country that needs to take them back. So we need to work with Romania, Albania and Tunisia that unfortunately are among the main countries of origin per presence of criminals in jail. Yesterday for instance, there was a Tunisian man that is already in jail for drug trafficking, he made a mess in jail in Reggio Emilia, he set his cell on fire, so I call and said 'but can't we expel him?'. No, because he has to serve eight years and furthermore we don't have a deal with Tunisia. So I promise myself, because Tunisia will be after Libya, my second target in North Africa, to reason with these persons. However, the Italian Roma, unfortunately we have to keep them in Italy." *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

Italian Minister of Interior Matteo Salvini sparked outrage after his words about Roma people on a local TV programme in Milan on Monday.

Salvini suggested a register for all Roma citizens and the immediate expulsion of those who committed crimes that are not Italian citizens. He added that: "the Italian Roma, unfortunately we have to keep them in Italy."

He also revamped plans for a register for the Roma people living in camps, a measure originally proposed by Roberto Maroni in 2008, when he was Minister of Interior, that was also met with criticism.

According to national statistics, there are between 110,000 and 170,000 Roma citizens in Italy. Roughly half of them are Italian citizens and half of them live in camps.
