France: 'Vile assassination' an attack on freedom of press - Tajani on Babchenko death

France, Strasbourg
May 30, 2018 at 12:48 GMT -00:00 · Published

The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani called the killing of the Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko an attack on freedom of the press, speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

"This vile assassination is a further unacceptable attack on press freedom and journalists who uphold our values and seek to preserve our democracy," Tajani said.

The President of the European Parliament called for "full light to be thrown on his death to ensure that those who carried out the assassination, those who pulled the strings be brought to justice."

Tajani also commented on the reported detention in Spain of UK national Bill Browder earlier in the day. The British national had tweeted that he was “in the back of the Spanish police car going to the station on the Russian arrest warrant. They won’t tell me which station." He is wanted by Russia for alleged fraud.

"When it comes to the arrest and later release of Mr Browder, we have received information as required by Guy Verhofstadt and we have had some positive news," Tajani said.

"The activist of British nationality has been released by the Spanish authorities, he was arrested originally by the Spanish polcie on the basis of an international arrest warrant, but his arrest was not confirmed and Mr Browder has since then been released and is now free," he added.
