UN: Israel blames Hamas for deadliest Gaza protest in years

United Nations, New York City

SOT, Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations (English): "I'm very happy you're standing so close to me because you can look at this picture. If we hadn't the IDF protecting our border, thousands of Palestinians would have crossed the fence yesterday ... [journalist interrupts] Wait! You asked a question. They wouldn't have stopped at the fence. They tried to break the fence and cross the fence. And then maybe they would have called you to ask what would be the next move. After you have 40,000 people crossing the fence, incited. They wouldn't stop, they would go few hundred meters, to the communities of Nahal Oz and other kibbutzim, and there maybe you'll ask them what their intentions are. So when you have thousands of people with explosives, with Molotov cocktails, coming to your fence, the goal of the IDF is to protect the fence. That's what we expect them, that's what they'll continue to do. You should ask the Hamas why they are sending thousands of people to touch the fence. You can protest, you can demonstrate in Gaza peacefully. But why you come to the fence? Why you try to break the fence? And why you bring terrorists while you do so?"

SOT, Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations (English): "We do have a indication of Iranians funding into Hamas. We have indication of connection between Hamas and Hezbollah. And we know that those rioters are well organised, well funded, well orchestrated by Hamas. And we do have that information. I hope in the future we can reveal more of that information. But I can say to you today that Iran is supporting the riots in Gaza."

Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations Danny Danon blamed Hamas for the dozens of dead Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip, speaking from New York City on Tuesday.

Danon claimed Hamas incited Gazans to tear down the border fence and enter Israeli territory, where they would attack Jewish settlements. Danon also justified the use of live ammunition by Israeli soldiers, saying "every country in the world has a right to defend itself."

Continuing, Danon urged the international community to denounce Hamas, accusing it of using its own people as human shields during the protests.

Asked whether there are indications of involvement of Iran, Danon said "We do have a indication of Iranians funding into Hamas. We have indication of connection between Hamas and Hezbollah. And we know that those rioters are well organised, well funded, well orchestrated by Hamas."

According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, as many as 60 people were killed and 2,000 were injured during Monday's Gaza protests.
