Thousands of pro-Kurdish demonstrators marched in Hannover, Saturday, against the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria during the Kurdish New Year celebrations, also known as Nowroz.

Scuffles erupted between protesters and police during a moment of the protest although, according to authorities, there were no major incidents.

Nowroz is the Kurdish and Persian celebration of the New Year, and its observance has become an important part of expressing Kurdish cultural identity. The festival is also largely celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and by some in Pakistan and India, among others.

The Nowroz celebrations are seen by many as a show of support for the establishment of the Kurdish state. The Kurdish association with the festival began in the 1950s when Kurds in the Middle East, and those who were part of the diaspora began adopting it is a tradition. By the late 1980s the festival was seen as an important way of expressing Kurdish identity.
