Miami emergency services officials confirmed that eight vehicles were crushed when a pedestrian bridge near Florida International University (FIU) collapsed, during a press conference from Miami-Dade on Thursday. According to a Miami-Dade fire chief, four people were found dead at the site.

"Our units responded to find eight trapped vehicles under the bridge. At this time we've transported eight victims to hospitals," said Paul Estopinan of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Division.

Estopian said that over one hundred specially trained firefighters are continuing to work alongside the urban search and rescue team to look for victims.

A Miami Highway Patrol officer asked the public to avoid the area surrounding the bridge, which is located close to the DIU campus. The bridge was erected on Saturday but was not due to be open to the public until 2019.

Specific numbers regarding how many people remained trapped underneath the bridge were not provided.
