Italy: Thousands march in Florence in memory of murdered Senegalese vendor

Thousands of people rallied in Florence on Saturday to commemorate Idy Diene, the Senegalese street vendor who was shot dead in the Tuscan city on Monday.

The rally was organised by the Senegalese community in Tuscany and attended by more than 10,000 people, according to local media. Senegalese and Italian citizens marched together across the city centre to arrive at the Vespucci Bridge, where Diene was killed.

Demonstrators chanted "stop racism" and "justice, justice." "I have never lived in an Italy like the one we have been experiencing lately. Remember that the people crossing the sea don't do it for fun," one demonstrator said.

Florence Mayor Dario Nardella took part in the march, and announced that the city of Florence would hold a day of mourning for Diene.

A 65-year old Italian citizen named Roberto Pirrone was arrested as a prime suspect for the killing of 53-year old Diene. Police said Pirrone has fired six pistol shots against Diene.

The suspect left his flat with what is believed to be a legally-owned gun, after leaving a suicide note, the police report. He said that instead of killing himself, he wanted to go to prison and went out to kill the first person he met on the street.
